…I-25 guardrail collision injures driver

This Ford Mercury at about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday crashed head on into a guardrail on Interstate 25 between the Hillsboro and Caballo exits after crossing over the median from the southbound lanes onto the north-bound lanes. State police said the two women in the vehicle were not seriously injured but the driver’s shoulder was hurt, possibly dislocated, from the forceful impact of the airbag. As can be seen, the car’s bumper somehow got torn or sheered off by the guardrail, which literally stopped the vehicle only several feet away.

Desert Journal Staff Report

A criminal complaint filed Jan. 14 in magistrate court alleges a Truth or Consequences man kidnapped and sexually molested a four-year-old girl after she went to his home to play with her friend.

The incident happened Nov. 10 at public housing in T or C.

The complaint says the girl went to the home of Ryan Duran Sr., 32, at 513 Coleman St. No. 13, to play with his son, also age 4, and later returned home to tell her mother that her playmate’s father was a bad man and that she did not want to go to his house again.

Duran allegedly gave the girl candy after he told her he was sorry and that he would never do it again.

Charges leveled against Duran include criminal sexual contact of a minor, a third-degree felony, and second-degree kidnapping.

According to the affidavit for arrest warrant filed by T or C Police Department Detective Thomas Schalkofski, Duran held the girl captive by neither putting her down nor allowing her to leave to go home at her request or command.

“She also said that although she did not want to go to the bathroom, [the boy’s] dad made her go. She said that after she went to the bathroom, [Duran] kept pulling her underwear ‘up and down… up and down’.” She also told her mother Duran touched her vagina and her buttocks while she repeatedly kicked him and told him, “No!” according to the affidavit.

A month later, police interviewed the young victim in a safe house context. She told police that Duran had insisted helping her with her underwear while in the bathroom. “After she was finished in the bathroom, he took her to the bedroom, put her on the bed and wouldn’t stop. She told him that she wanted to go home but he would not stop and would not let her up. She also said that she kicked at the defendant but he would not let her leave,” the affidavit alleges.

Duran gave statements to police on three occasions. During the first interview with Officer Willy Kerin at the onset of the initial report, Duran allegedly said he was sorry about what had happened and that he had “some real concerns about his way of thinking lately,” according to the affidavit. “He also said he would take whatever punishment he had to take and was very sorry.”

But during the second interview held four days later, Duran told police the girl got “kind of a little scared” when he purportedly was trying to get her pants buttoned and zippered. He said she cried and got scared and at some point told him that she wanted to go home, the affidavit states.

Finally, during a statement Nov. 19, Druan at first invoked his right to an attorney, but then told police he didn’t want to speak with an attorney before signing a waiver of his Miranda rights.

Duran told police the girl came into the house while he was outside working on his car. After she asked for food and drink, he gave her a soda and chips and let her watch cartoons, he told police.

“He said he then took her into the bathroom and helped her with her pants and underpants. He then carried her into the bedroom and was trying to stand her on the bed when she laid down instead. At that time her pants and underpants were down and he laid down on top of her, placing his groin against her naked groin and rubbing against her,” the affidavit said.

Duran also told police the girl was scared and crying and asked to leave. “He then helped her up and pulled her pants back up. He also admitted that he may have given her candy and apologized to her, asking her to give him a hug,” the affidavit said.

The affidavit doesn’t explain the two-month delay of police filing the criminal complaint. It also was not until the night of Jan. 17 when police arrested Duran on the charges.

Duran was arraigned Jan. 22 in magistrate court and Judge Thomas Pestak set bond at $20,000 cash. The court also set Duran’s preliminary hearing for 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 31.

Jim Goton of the Lakeview RV Park & Store fills up a customer’s propane tank. Propane sales along with gasoline and other retail sales inside the store help suppement the park’s operations.

The Lakeview RV Park at Caballo stays about half full year around, according to owner Beverly Goton. Shade trees in particular are a big plus to RV parks that depend on summer business (above left). These brand new sparkling washers are among the investments made by the Lakeview RV Park in the new laundry room owners Jim and Beverly Goton built (above right).

Beautiful lake views at Caballo RV parks

Another Sierra County recreational paradise

By Carol Main of the Desert Journal

Travelers and vacationers in Sierra County have many beautiful recreational vehicle (RV) parks to choose from and several of them are just south of Truth or Consequences on scenic New Mexico Highway 187.

The Lakeview RV Park, owned by Jim and Beverly Goton, sits at the intersection of NM 187 and NM 152 at the 63 exit of Interstate 25 South.

In addition to 31 full service RV hookups, the Gotons also have two cabins and four tent sites, with every site having a beautiful view of the Caballo Mountains and Lake.

The Gotons took over their location from KOA Campgrounds just one and a half years ago and have already built a large laundry room and completely remodeled the restrooms, an investment that is finally paying off. They also paved their parking lot after installing new underground gasoline storage tanks.

“We got rid of the KOA franchise as fast as we could,” Jim Goton said, ``because their annual fee was $5,900 and then they took 10 percent of gross income on top of that, and did nothing for us in return. We are better off on our own."

“Many of our visitors this year,” Beverly Goton said, ``are returning from last year, and several of them brought more people with them.”

“We do not have just one season like some RV parks that are dependent on winter visitors alone. We stay about half full all year. And we try to stock a little of everything in the store and our gas and propane sales help too," she said.

Jim said they are trying to negotiate with the federal and state governments for free access for their visitors to the lake’0s beaches, because the Gotons own 99.57 feet of land toward the lake east of NM 187.

“Since we own the land on both sides of the highway,” Jim said, ``we want free access for our guests but neither the Bureau of Reclamation or the state will talk to us.”

On south of NM 152 on NM 187 is Lil' Abners Store and RV Park two miles north of the Caballo Lake State Park entrance.

Owner Julie Heavner said, “My RV park business is steady but a little better during the summer months and I have tremendous local support that gets me through the cold winter months. We all help each other out here.”

“I don't have a laundry room because Jim and Bev built such a marvelous one. And they have gas and propane so I try to provide a little of everything else. I sell fishing and hunting licenses and lottery tickets and have the movie rentals and sell live bait and fishing tackle as well as groceries," she said.

Heavner has been in business for five years and said constant store expansion must come before other considerations.

“I open early and close late,” Heavner said, ``364 days a year, and a lot of people stop here for live bait before going out on the lakes."

Heavner also provides notary, fax and ATM services along with 14 RV spaces, 12 of them with full service hookups, surrounded by junior growth cyprus and pine trees.

C.J. Ellis' Caballo Lake RV Park is south of Lil' Abners on the lakeside of NM 187, and is spotless with 10 full service hookups and many dry camp sites.

Regina Keech and Sherrod McCaughren share 24-hour camp host duties here, and Regina said, “We just planted several pine trees last year that are coming along fine.”

Ellis has a new concrete slab on which she is ready to build shower facilities and has been steadily improving the grounds since she bought the house and bare land five years ago.

“We also have a guest house,” Keech said, “that we rent out by the night or for a weekend, and we welcome pets. There are several trails down to the beach that our people really enjoy.”

Keech said Ellis does not plan to build a laundry room either, “because Lakeview has such a great one and many of our people go there.”

Old growth trees that provide shade for RVs are something that owners Angela and David Hicks already have on their Eastview RV Park, one mile north of the Caballo Lake State Park entrance on NM 187.

“Some of our 18 full service hookup sites,” Angela said, “have shade and some don't. We provide extra large spaces, with boat and RV storage available too, and we even have a basketball hoop for evening fun. We have future plans to build a laundry room and showers.”

David and Angela have owned the property for five years and Angela said they are busy all year.

Overnight, weekly, and monthly rates vary among the four parks from a low of $5 a night for a dry camp at Caballo Lake State Park ranging up to a high of $150 a month for a full service hookup space at Lil' Abners.

Some parks provide electricity for the fee they charge, and others charge extra for it.
